冒頭の音楽から始まって、話がずっと人情＋ペーソス＋艶笑の喜劇のような雰囲気で進んでいたのが、終盤で急転直下シビアな展開になり、社会派的な要素が浮かび上がるコントラストも印象的。いささかメッセージ性が生で出すぎているきらいはあるにせよ、この澱りが残るような後味は重要だろう。

『祇園の姉妹』見終わった。溝口健二監督の36年版。驚くほどの現代性。フィルムが欠落しているせいもあるのか、無駄なくテンポも良く情緒に流されることもなく硬質。男性社会的価値観への従属と反抗という、姉妹の生き方の対比が効果的。特に「男はんは敵や」と言う妹（山田五十鈴）が実に良い。傑作。
